The Cat Who Asked for Boots
Once there was a miller who had three sons. When the miller grew very old, he left everything he owned to his boys. The eldest got the big stone mill. The second got the sturdy grey donkey. And the youngest — whose name was Thomas — got only the cat.
Thomas sat down on a log and sighed. 'What am I supposed to do with a cat?' he said quietly.
The cat jumped up beside him, straightened his whiskers, and said, 'Give me a good pair of boots and a bag with a long strap, and I promise you — things will get much better.' Thomas was so surprised to hear the cat talk that he nearly fell off the log.
Thomas had very little money, but he went to the cobbler and bought the finest small boots he could find. The cat pulled them on, admired his own feet for a moment, and smiled a wide, pleased smile. 'Now,' he said, 'leave everything to me.'
