The Great Silence

At Granny's house, there was a magical forest. Every night, at bedtime, it would start to sing: the leaves went swish-swish, the stream went burble-burble, the owls went hoo-hoo. And Maya would fall asleep smiling.

But that night, nothing. Not one swish. Not one burble. Not the tiniest hoo. The forest was as silent as a broken music box.

Maya pulled her boots on over her pyjamas and walked in between the trees. There, sitting on a tree stump, she found a red fox wearing a green scarf and holding a tiny conductor's baton. He was sniffling sadly.

"My name is Filou," he said. "I am the conductor of the forest. And I have lost the Golden Note — the one that makes everyone want to sing. Without it… no more music."
